At the time of GTA’s investigation, the nearly 300-acre site was heavily overgrown, with submerged tree stumps, dense brush, standing water, and muck deposits up to 20 feet thick, creating significant safety and access challenges. GTA performed multiple subsurface explorations, including over 100 borings, CPT soundings, piezometer installations, and muck probes using specialized amphibious equipment. Construction-phase services included observation of muck removal, fill placement, and compaction testing under difficult conditions, with additional constraints related to historical military use and protected environmental species.
