About

“Your team’s responsiveness and professionalism were a big part of keeping things moving smoothly, it was an absolute pleasure working with you.” – SUW Group (Client)

GTA provided construction observation and materials testing services for a 13-story mixed-use high-rise in downtown Newark. The concrete superstructure includes underground parking, 2,120 square feet of retail space, and 225 apartment units. The 13th floor features resident amenity areas and a wrap-around terrace offering expansive views of the Passaic River and the surrounding New York City skyline. Constructed under an extremely aggressive schedule, the project advanced at a pace of up to two full floors per week.

GTA’s services included comprehensive concrete testing and rebar inspection. The project presented significant challenges due to complex rebar configurations and continuously evolving design changes, requiring consistent and effective communication between field and engineering personnel. GTA also played a critical role during overnight concrete pours, providing real-time reporting of testing results and truck delivery timing to site personnel. This facilitated continuous compliance with ACI standards and supported the project’s demanding production pace.

Working within Newark’s dense urban environment introduced daily on-site hazards and challenges. Limited space meant material offloading and construction activities frequently occurred near pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Overhead crane operations delivering materials to upper floors posed an ongoing risk of falling objects. As the structure increased in height, so did exposure to leading-edge work and higher wind speeds, which often carried moving debris. Additionally, much of the site work was performed during December and January, making cold-weather conditions and ice control significant safety considerations.
